CME OF BIOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF BONE AND BONE DISORDERS
Metabolic bone diseases are disorders of bone strength usually caused by a deficiency of minerals, vitamin D and bone mass or bone structure. The most common metabolic disorder is osteoporosis. When untreated, it can lead to serious disability. The most vulnerable group for osteoporosis is geriatric population, people with the history of fractures, steroid use, intestinal diseases, organ transplants and kidney disorders.
Osteoporosis, which is also known as the “silent disease” is characterized by impaired bone strength caused by attenuated bone mineral density and compromised bone quality, which results in high susceptibility to fragility fractures. The morbidity, disability and mortality associated with osteoporosis can impose a substantial burden on affected individuals, their families and the healthcare individuals, their families and the healthcare system. Therefore, risk factors and a population at risk for osteoporosis must be identified to reduce potential burden.
The objective of the CME to enhance their understanding of a contemporary approach to basic biochemical to clinical bone science as related to inherited and acquired bone disorders, effects of chronic illness on muscle and bone, bone therapeutics, bone diagnostics related to biochemistry and pathology, bone signalling and metabolism.
