A nodal centre of the International Network of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa, was inaugurated at the Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre at Irungalur near Trichy on Friday 7th July 2017.
A three-day (3T- Teach, Train, Transfer for Integrated Bioethics in Health Sciences) training programme was inaugurated along with the Bioethics Unit. Around 50 health science faculty members from six medical colleges in the country participated in the programme.
The programme aims at training medical teaching faculty to impart bio-ethical knowledge to their students and enables them to emerge as ethically bound health professionals. The bioethics unit and the training was inaugurated by Prof. Dr S. Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor, The TamilNadu Dr. MGR University, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Russell D’Souza, Head, Asia Pacific Bioethics Division, UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa, Dean, Director of Health Sciences and faculty members of Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Geethalakshmi observed that adopting the principles of bioethics would help bring about transparency in health care and medical research. “In our pursuit of knowledge, it is important to maintain the integrity of human and animal rights and they are fundamental tenets of society,” Dr Geethalakshmi said in her address.
